• Summer Frenzy!

    The Maypole is gallivanting all over the country this summer – check our dates pages for details.  We’re looking forward to strutting our stuff at two festival on Saturday – St Leonard’s and Stade Saturdays in Hastings – come and join us for an ice-cream by the sea!

    Fancy a funky Ceilidh Jam on a lovely summer Sunday (because the sun ALWAYS shines on us!) – join us at Citadel Festival in London on July 17th.  Then we’re out and about in Telford, Shrewsbury, Burnley and London!  Come and say hello!

  • Artist Sharing/Audition 2016

    We’re looking for professional folk and hip hop dancers, beat boxers and musicians.

    Folk Dance Remixed is a groundbreaking company creating unique fusions between       Folk and Hip Hop styles with live music. Led by Artistic Directors Kerry Fletcher and Natasha Khamjani, the company rediscover old traditions through contemporary forms.

    When: Wednesday 27th April – Registration: 10.00am – Start: 10.15am sharp – 4pm

    Where: Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent’s Park Road, London NW1 7AY

    We are hosting an artist sharing day where dancers will have the chance to learn some hip hop & folk dance, and beat boxers will collaborate with musicians.  It’s a fantastic opportunity to join in a creative, inspiring and fun workshop day and meet new artists. 

    If you are available this summer, you can also audition to be in the company for our summer 2016 tour and/or workshop team. 

    We are remounting our show, Step Hop House, and developing our Street Dance the Maypole workshops and Ceilidh Jam experience. If we are unsuccessful with our funding bid we will be taking a smaller company on tour. We’ve had 3 hugely successful summer tours so far and we’re looking forward to making 2016 the best yet!

    If you’re up for joining a groundbreaking company, are prepared to learn new moves and fuse folk with hip hop, love working outdoors, can be part of a team to build and strike the set with grace and good humour, who will camp on the odd occasion and put their all into the show – then come on down!

    Audition: We’re looking to expand our company pool, and so if you would like to audition, see the likely dates on this PDF – if you think you’re free for them all please email company@folkdanceremixed.com with your links, CV and a short paragraph of 100 words as to why you’d like to be involved and what you will bring to the project.  A current DBS will be a requirement to work with us.

  • May in a Day! Get your brooms out!

    We’re delighted to be working with the English Folk Dance and Song Society for their annual May in a Day event.  We’ll be whirling everyone into our Street Dance the Maypole workshops, and showing off some broom dances we’ve been working on over the cold, dark months.

    There are also arts and crafts sessions during the day with a chance to decorate and make your own trilby hat!  And there’s a ceilidh with the Folk Dance Remixed band!

  • Come Ceilidh Jam with Cecil!

    We’re starting a monthly, lively, fast paced and fun Ceilidh Jam class at Cecil Sharp House, Camden, London, led by Folk Dance Remixed’s professional dancers and musicians.  Come and join us!

    • 27 June, 7pm – 9pm
    • 25 July, 7pm – 9pm

    You can join in learning our unique style of English social folk dances remixed with street dance and other folk dance forms from around the world – with an emphasis on the sociable! Ceilidh Jam is aimed at committed dancers (amateur, semi and pro) and teachers with some prior experience of dance (of any style) wishing to develop their practice. Learn folk formations and conventions, as well as technique and footwork from a variety of street and folk dance styles, with an opportunity for creative experimentation. Explore something new and how to use these social dance forms creatively.

  • Starting in September... : Rugby and Folk Dance? You bet!

    Folk Dance Remixed are locked away in a rehearsal studio this week learning about Rugby.  Oh yes!  We have been commissioned by Brent Council to create a piece for the opening of their new cultural space in Willesden, as well as celebrating the Rugby World Cup being in Brent (which is hosting the Wembley Stadium matches).

    We are incorporating the four countries and host country into our new piece – so representing and remixing traditional dance from Ireland, Argentina, Romania, New Zealand and UK!  This week we have experts from Irish Folk Dance and UK folk dance in the company and are getting in Romanian Folk Specialists, NZ and a Rugby expert!

    We have our musical director and composter, Dogan Mehmet, working on the music too.

  • Monday 31 August : Fabulous Finale at Towersey Festival 2015

    The rain didn’t dampen the spirits at the finale of Towersey Festival on Bank Holiday Monday!

    During the day we had festival goers dancing in their wellies at The Parasol in the Showground – and then performed Step Hop House to the massive Finale audience at Venue 65 in the evening.

    We’ve had great feedback from the audience – and you can see great photos of the show taken by Chris Walshaw on our Flickr feed.

  • Sat 29 & Sun 30 August 2015 : Getting Hitched at Festival of Love

    What better way to celebrate a Festival of Love and several weddings than with Folk Dance Remixed twitching their maypole ribbons for you?! We had a fantastic time at the final weekend of the Festival of Love at Southbank Centre, London at the weekend.   Lots of great feedback – here’s a glimpse of what you missed!

    You are invited to witness, experience, and take part in a unique night of folk dance fusion!

    Kicking off with the new Folk Dance Remixed performance, Step Hop House is a fresh, quirky, colourful and magical collision of of traditional and hip hop dance and music. This high-energy show is a unique remix of maypole, clogging, ceilidh, street, house and breakdance, with a hint of African and Bollywood set to a live soundtrack of fiddle, bass, percussion and beat boxing. This is folk and street dance like you’ve never seen it before!

    The show is followed by a Ceilidh Jam that will get you on your feet for a funked up, unique, folky, social dance! Using traditional callers to teach, artistic directors Kerry Fletcher and Natasha Khamjani will be mixing folk formations, street dance, legendary moves and freestyle grooves from the soul train line to lucky 7, strip the willow to the electric slide… As well as the performance, there will be a pre-show workshop creating wraps ‘n’ ripples mixed with waves ‘n’ breaks – a funky routine, mixed with classic maypole moves.
